According to social experts, here in the Philippines, in order to succeed in comedy industry, most comedians follow the “tried and tested formula” of either having slapstick, or making fun of people’s imperfections (with the likes of Diego Llorico, Zorayda Sanchez) , or those “dumb blondes/sexy comediennes ” (Rufa Mae Quinto, Maureen Larrazabal) or discriminating gay/lesbian people (Roderick Paulate).

Over the years that we are glued to Gag Shows or Sitcoms (Situational Commedies), I am sick and tired of the same repetitive brand of comedy shows. I was wondering if it is possible that Filipinos can have a good comedy without the dispense of other’s imperfections or hurting others? I would want to have some intellectual comedy ala Rex Navarette or just to have a “straight to the point” comedy show. The question is, are the Filipino viewers ready for such?

Last summer, GMA (through QTV 11) franchised a 5-minute comedy show from Europe that features a short skit with a timely, concise, ntellectual humor. The show is called Camera Café. The show is a hit in Europe and other countries as it has been adapted in other parts of the globe. Luckily, the show was brought to the Philippine television.

Though it’s brief and often times, “bitin”, I love the show. It never fails to amuse me and I salute the production people behind the show (especially the writers). At long last, Filipino audience can have a new breed of “comedy show” away from the “stereotyped” gag shows we had in the past. I hope they can appreciate this kind of comedy because its more intellectually stimulating yet entertaining.
